Companies are being compelled to intensely focus only on core business activities to remain competitive. Intense pressures of Global competition have resulted in the following trends-

Manufacturing companies are trying to become Global sources through rapid up-gradation of product Designs and Quality, combined with capacity increases to Global levels. While the first strategy requires Shrinking time-to-market continuously, the latter involves organic growth through green-field / brown-field projects or inorganic growth through takeovers. In either case the crucial first step is to acquire large Global customers from the advanced countries. 

Service companies are rapidly becoming Global sources for a broad range of common business processes, as can be seen from the torrid growth in the BPO sector. Along with this race for volumes in providing standard services, the window of opportunity for catering to high-skilled service requirements of corporate clients both in India and abroad is opening up.

A number of skilled activities are already being outsourced. Product design, Design modeling & Verification, After-sales service, Enterprise solutions, etc., are a few such examples. More recently we have seen moves to even R&D activities to RPOs. The traditional boundaries separating activities that can be out-sourced from those that cannot are disappearing.
